Pa. Lottery’s Xpress Sports Considering Changing Game Options

It goes without saying that gambling in the Keystone State is doing quite well. The Lottery is one of the sectors that is still shining which is not very surprising especially considering the fact that it has existed longer than most other forms of gambling in the state. Even so, it continues to post record revenues in terms of both sales and profits – for instance in the recently concluded 2018-19 fiscal year, it recorded a whopping $1.14 billion which is almost $50 million higher than what was recorded in the previous fiscal year.

The stellar performance posted by the state lottery was partly due to the boost it received from a number of modernization efforts in the state. These were enabled by the massive statewide gambling expansion legislation that came into effect on October 2017. This came with the creation of the online lottery which went on to generate a total of $31.3 million in profits.

Xpress Sports Not Performing as Expected

While the Pennsylvania Lottery’s overall business seems to be on track, one of its verticals seems to be lagging behind, that is, Express Sports. The Lottery saw an opportunity to attract more customers and the direction that they chose to follow was to roll out virtual games that mimic actual sports.

Now, there were a lot of big expectations for that particular vertical even though the state already introduced sports betting as part of its gaming expansion bid. In fact, the Pennsylvania Lottery was the first lottery in the United States to offer virtual sports betting, which goes to show how much faith they had in it.

Changes Coming Soon

Despite all that, the Lottery officials have not been shy to admit that things have not been worked out as well as expected. According to Ewa Dworakowski, the Lottery’s spokeswoman, there is still a lot that they continue to learn about the industry which is totally expected since it is the first lottery to venture into virtual sports.

The spokeswoman further revealed that the Pennsylvania Lottery is currently making modifications to the games offered by Xpress Sports. These changes are reportedly based on feedback from both the players and the retailers.

“The Lottery’s mission is to grow sales and profits for older Pennsylvanians and in order to grow sales responsibly, it is important for the Lottery to continue to try new games that may appeal to new players,” Ewa Dworakowski added.

Xpress Sports lovers in Pennsylvania can expect an announcement about the new games and promotions this fall. As expected, the Lottery officials have very high hopes for them as well.
