Pennsylvania’s gambling industry saw impressive growth in August 2024, with total revenue hitting $525.5 million. This marks a 14.9% increase from the same time last year and a 4.9% rise from July. The state’s booming iGaming sector played a key role in driving these numbers, further cementing Pennsylvania’s place as a top market for online gaming.

iGaming Leads the Charge

Pennsylvania’s iGaming revenue surged to $183.7 million in August, a 29% jump compared to last year and the second-highest monthly figure on record, just shy of March 2024’s $191.1 million. Online slots dominated the scene, contributing $138.3 million, while table games brought in $43.2 million, and online poker added $2.2 million.

Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course maintained its position as the leading iGaming operator, raking in $72.1 million. Following closely were Valley Forge Casino Resort with $46.0 million and Rivers Casino Philadelphia with $30.8 million. These casinos are at the forefront of Pennsylvania’s growing digital gaming landscape, offering a variety of online slots, table games, and poker to cater to an expanding audience.

Sports Betting: A Strong but Mixed Performance

Gross sports betting revenue for the month reached $45.4 million, a significant 48.4% rise year-on-year, though it saw a dip of 13.9% from July. After accounting for promotional credits, taxable sports betting revenue stood at $30.0 million.

Online sports betting led the charge, generating $25.5 million, with retail outlets contributing $4.5 million. The total betting handle for August climbed to $485.3 million, a 23.5% increase from last year, highlighting the continued popularity of sports wagering in the state.

FanDuel, partnered with Valley Forge Casino Resort, remained the top operator, generating $13.3 million in revenue from $176.5 million in bets. DraftKings, partnered with Hollywood Casino at the Meadows, followed closely with $7.8 million in revenue from a $124.4 million handle.

Land-Based Gambling Still Dominates

Despite the rapid growth of iGaming and sports betting, land-based slot machines remained the top source of gambling revenue in Pennsylvania. Slots generated $211.1 million in August, up 3.9% from the previous year. However, physical table games took a slight hit, seeing a 2.1% decline in revenue with $81.0 million.

Additional Sectors: Modest Gains and Losses

Other gambling sectors also saw movement in August. Video gaming terminals experienced a 5.7% revenue increase, bringing in $3.7 million. However, the fantasy sports segment saw an 18.3% drop, earning just $647,522. Here’s a breakdown:
