Latest news reveals that MGM has opted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local-news\/2019\/05\/21\/mgm-pulls-out-of-talks-with-wynn-over-sale-of-everett-casino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"break off the talks (opens in a new tab)\">break off the talks<\/a> to buy the Greater Boston casino property citing a number of concerns that were voiced by the casino operator&#8217;s stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Confirming this in Tuesday statement, MGM&#8217;s officials\npointed out that they have noticed the &#8220;anxiety raised by various\nstakeholders regarding a transaction and this troubles us at MGM&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"wynns-troubles\">Wynn&#8217;s Troubles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When MGM Resorts International and Wynn Resort announced that\nthey were in talks last Friday, the news was met with a lot of speculation. Some\nanalysts pointed out that the sanctions that leveled against Wynn Resorts following a year-long investigation had led the\ncompany&#8217;s executives to consider the sale of the Encore Boston Harbor property\neven before it is opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, Wynn Resorts was slapped with a $35 million fine\nby the Massachusetts Gaming Commission for failing to act on a number of sexual\nharassment accusations that were leveled against Steve Wynn, the casino operator&#8217;s\nfounder, and former boss. Matt Maddox, the\ncompany&#8217;s current chief executive was also fined $500,000 with the gaming\ncommission going further to select a monitor that would be tasked with overseeing\nthe Encore Boston Harbor&#8217;s operations for three years \u2013 this would also be at\nthe expense of the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All these considered, MGM&#8217;s plans to pursue the Greater Boston\narea casino fell apart with the company shifting its stand and saying the best\ncourse of action going forward was to stop the discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;We only wish to have a positive impact on communities in which we operate. We think the best course of action is to discontinue discussions concerning this opportunity. We wish the company and the Everett community all the best and look forward to visiting their beautiful resort when it opens and welcoming the 5,600 employees to our industry,&#8221; MGM&#8217;s statement read.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria was one of the strongest opposers of the potential sale of Encore Boston Harbor since he had apparently not been consulted. The sale of the property, as it turns out, would not be able to take place without the mayor&#8217;s written authorization under the terms of a 2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennsylvaniacasinos.com\/news\/pa-advances-bill-that-would-prohibit-truck-stop-gambling\/\">host community agreement<\/a> that was signed by Wynn Resorts and the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-now\">What Now?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, following the news that the sale of the casino was no\nlonger an option, Wynn Resorts clarified that the company had ceased discussions\nwith MGM Resorts after careful consideration. Moreover, the company confirmed\nthat it does remain committed to opening and operating the Greater Boston\nCasino as it is the only operator that is &#8220;able to do so&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MGM, on the other hand, will now be refocusing its efforts towards its <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"MGM Springfield operation (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/boston\/news\/2019\/02\/15\/mgm-springfield-gambling-revenue-for-january.html\" target=\"_blank\">MGM Springfield operation<\/a> whose performance has not been as great as initially anticipated.
